Gary Rossington is an American musician, best known as a founding member and guitarist of the iconic Southern rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd. He was born on December 4, 1951, in Jacksonville, Florida, and started playing guitar at the age of 14.
In 1964, Rossington met future Lynyrd Skynyrd frontman Ronnie Van Zant, and the two became close friends. They played together in several local bands before forming Lynyrd Skynyrd in 1969. The band’s name was inspired by their high school gym teacher, Leonard Skinner, who notoriously disliked long hair and sent several of the band members to the principal’s office for their appearance.
Lynyrd Skynyrd quickly gained a following in the Southeastern United States with their unique blend of blues, rock, and country music. Their breakout album, “Pronounced Leh-nerd Skin-nerd,” was released in 1973 and included the hit singles “Free Bird” and “Sweet Home Alabama.” Rossington co-wrote several of the album’s songs and played lead guitar on all tracks.
Over the years, Rossington became known for his distinctive guitar style, which combined fast-picking, slide guitar, and fingerpicking. He also co-wrote many of the band’s other hit songs, including “Gimme Three Steps,” “Saturday Night Special,” and “What’s Your Name.”
Tragically, Lynyrd Skynyrd’s success was cut short in 1977 when a plane crash killed three band members, including Ronnie Van Zant. Rossington, who was also on the plane, survived but suffered serious injuries, including a broken arm and leg. He took a break from music to recover and mourn the loss of his bandmates.
After Lynyrd Skynyrd’s disbandment in 1977, Rossington continued to play music in various projects, including the Rossington Collins Band, which he formed with fellow Lynyrd Skynyrd guitarist Allen Collins. The band released two albums in the late 1970s before disbanding in 1982.
In 1987, Rossington reunited with some of the surviving members of Lynyrd Skynyrd to perform a tribute concert for their fallen bandmates. The concert was so well-received that the band decided to officially reform and continue making music. Rossington has been a member of Lynyrd Skynyrd ever since, playing guitar and co-writing songs on their numerous albums.
In addition to his work with Lynyrd Skynyrd, Rossington has released solo albums and collaborated with other artists, including country singer Travis Tritt. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2006 as a member of Lynyrd Skynyrd.
Rossington’s legacy as a musician is undeniable. He helped create a unique sound that blended various genres of music and continues to inspire musicians to this day. His distinctive guitar playing and songwriting have left an indelible mark on the music industry, and his contributions to Lynyrd Skynyrd’s legacy will never be forgotten.
